Scheherazade’s Mirror is a non-profit civil society organisation working to reduce inequality, advance gender equality and human rights, foster intercultural understanding, and contribute to more inclusive societies.

We work with and for young people, women, forcibly displaced and migrant people, survivors of violence, and individuals and communities experiencing discrimination, exclusion or unequal access to rights and opportunities.

Our approach combineseducation and capacity building, cultural awareness and intercultural learning, community participation and support, research, awareness-raising and advocacy. Where people face barriers to exercising their rights or accessing protection, we also work to facilitate access to appropriate psychosocial, social and legal support. We believe that lasting social change requires both addressing structural inequalities and creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds to understand one another, challenge stereotypes and participate meaningfully in the societies and communities in which they live.

The name Scheherazade’s Mirror reflects this philosophy. Inspired by Scheherazade, the storyteller of One Thousand and One Nights, it evokes the power of stories to cross cultural boundaries, challenge assumptions and allow us to see both others and ourselves from a different perspective.

Young people are an important part of this approach. We recognise their potential as agents of long-term social change and create opportunities for them to participate, lead, learn from one another and shape the communities around them. We place particular emphasis on meaningful participation and peer-led approaches, involving young people not simply as recipients of activities, but as partners in developing them.

Women and gender equality are equally central to our work. We seek to address the inequalities, discrimination and violence that disproportionately affect women and girls, while creating spaces in which their experiences, knowledge and voices can shape the responses that concern them. Our work approaches gender equality through a human rights and intersectional lens, recognising how gender interacts with displacement, migration, age, disability, socioeconomic circumstances and other factors that can deepen exclusion.
